Researchers at Stanford University have discovered a surprising method to improve the performance of lithium-silicon batteries. Short voltage pulses can partially restore lost capacity – an important step for longer-lasting energy storage.
Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous, but their limited lifespan is a well-known problem. Although silicon anodes promise higher energy density, they suffer from fragmentation with repeated use. This results in isolated silicon particles that no longer contribute to battery capacity.
The Stanford researchers found that a short, targeted pulse of electricity can reconnect these isolated fragments to the anode. In their experiments, the scientists discovered a direct connection between the voltage applied and the capacity restored. However, there is an upper limit: voltages that are too high lead to the degradation of the electrolyte.
When used optimally – 4 volts for 5 minutes – a considerable increase in capacity of 30% could be achieved. This simple method could significantly extend the lifespan of lithium-silicon batteries. The one in the trade magazine Science Published study shows the potential of this method for various applications. From electric vehicles to portable electronics, many sectors could benefit from longer-lasting batteries.
However, further research is needed to explore optimal use and possible long-term effects. The results of this research could have far-reaching implications for the development of high-performance batteries. This technology could represent a significant advance, particularly for applications that require high energy density and a long service life, such as in electromobility. Further studies are planned to investigate the long-term effects and scalability of the method.
