Pokemon GO continues to be a real success story. Even after the initial hype has subsided, the mobile game can turn over huge sums of money. Now it turns out that 2020 beats all previous years in terms of sales: players spent $ 1 billion this year.
One thing is certain: The hype that Pokemon GO achieved at the start will never be achieved again. In economic terms, however, the first wild weeks after the launch are not the highlight in-game history for the makers. While the company achieved sales of $ 832 million in the 2016 launch year, it saw an average decline in 2017. According to an analysis by Sensor Tower, this trend was significantly reversed in the following years and especially in 2020.
In the first ten months, Pokemon GO players spent around $ 1 billion on the game for the first time, making it the best economic result since launch. Compared to 2019, an increase in sales of 11 percent is expected, calculated over the first 10 months, you can even achieve an increase of 30 percent compared to the previous year.
As Sensor Tower further adds, Pokemon GO can be classified as “Mobile Game #3 in terms of player spending” with the current numbers. According to this analysis, only PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings/ Arena of Valor have to admit defeat. A total of $4.2 billion has been sold with Pokemon GO since its launch, with US players investing most diligently in the title, with total sales of $1.5 billion – this corresponds to 36.3 percent of all previous sales. Japan follows in second place with 1.3 billion, Germany follows in third with 238.6 million.
