Portal With RTX: Remaster of Valve’s cult game now available

Portal is one of the cult classics in 3D gaming history. Now, 15 years after its launch, the game has received a makeover. Nvidia uses a complete remaster of the title to flex its optical muscles with ray tracing and new textures.

Portal is just a lot nicer: now available as a free DLC

In September, Nvidia presented some new tools at the GPU Technology Conference, GTC, with which old games can be upgraded in terms of graphics quality thanks to AI support. One of these tools, called RTX Remix, can sometimes automatically add better textures and modern techniques such as ray tracing to titles. As Nvidia announces, such a completely revamped version of the cult game Portal has been available for a short time.

The most important thing first: For a few days it has been possible to download it from the official Steam site, Nvidia simply baptizes the work “Portal with RTX“. The update will be provided as free DLC, so due to Portal’s widespread adoption, many of those interested should be able to access it without further payment. If not, the original title is currently available for less than 1 euro.

Is presentable

For Nvidia, Portal with RTX is more or less an excellent tech demo to demonstrate the latest techniques in a framework that is familiar to many gamers. Ray tracing and new textures breathe new life into the title in terms of lighting and reflections. DLSS 3 can also generate new frames on RTX 40 cards with the help of AI, and Nvidia Reflex is intended to increase the reaction speed. The result of these efforts is impressive.

Particularly impressive are the portals themselves, which are surrounded by luminous particles and, thanks to ray tracing, reflect their light and that of the rooms behind it onto nearby surfaces. The new textures on objects and surfaces, in combination with the lighting effects, definitely make materials appear much more plastic.
