Price slide continues: Elon Musk’s SpaceX is approaching the IPO price

After the recent IPO, SpaceX shares are plummeting. The price fell below $140 and is dangerously close to the issue price. High losses worth billions and new competition are putting the space company under enormous pressure.

SpaceX shares are losing significant value

Almost a month after its IPO, Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX is experiencing a (continuing) setback on the US stock market. The share price fell to below $140 (around 123 euros) in mid-July 2026, approaching the original issue price of $135 (around 118 euros). At its peak in mid-June, the security was still trading for $225 (around €197). Investors’ initial enthusiasm was based, among other things, on the expectation that the company would play a central role in the field of artificial intelligence. The hopes were based on plans for orbital data centers and the integration of the startup xAI. However, investors are now increasingly focusing on fundamental financial data. And these show that a quick profit is currently not in sight.

Doubts about profitability

Critics complain that the current business figures hardly justify the group’s high valuation. In 2025, the company recorded a net loss of around $4.9 billion (around €4.3 billion) on sales of $18.6 billion (around €16.3 billion). As CNBC reported, the recent inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 index did not bring about a turnaround. Instead, passive index funds put further pressure on the paper. In addition, international competition is growing, which could jeopardize the US group’s unique selling point. China recently demonstrated the successful capture and recovery of a Long March missile stage at sea. Japanese engineers have also recently made progress in reusable rocket technologies.

Crucial Starship test is approaching

An important factor for future course development is the Starship program. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has formally closed its investigation into a previous false start and given the green light for the upcoming test flight. Investors are hoping for positive news from the space sector. The upcoming launch will have 20 functional third-generation Starlink satellites on board for the first time. From the perspective of SpaceX and its investors, a successful flight would be an important signal to the market. However, another failure is likely to further strain investor confidence.
