The US chip company Qualcomm has surprisingly presented the new Snapdragon 780G 5G Mobile Platform. This is a new octacore SoC that will very soon be found in the first, mostly quite cheap, smartphones from manufacturers such as Xiaomi.

According to the Wikimovel portal, the Snapdragon 780G 5G is equipped with six ARM Cortex-A55 cores with a maximum of 1.8 GHz, but also gets two high-end cores based on the ARM Cortex-A78 architecture with a maximum of 2.4 GHz Clock donated. The production is said to be on a 5-nanometer scale, with Samsung presumably taking over the production.

Premium features from the Snapdragon 888 soon for cheaper devices

According to Qualcomm’s press release, the chip also has a Snapdragon X53 modem on board, which is capable of reaching 3.3 gigabits per second downstream in sub-6 GHz networks. There are also some premium features that were previously reserved for the Snapdragon 888 high-end SoC, including Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. Thanks to the FastConnect 6900 connectivity system, up to 3.6 Gigabit / s can be achieved via Wi-Fi 6. In addition, even Wi-Fi 6E is supported.

Qualcomm is also equipping the new Octacore SoC with an Adreno 642 GPU according to the previously published specifications by Wikimovel, which brings a number of elite gaming features, including post-upgradeable graphics drivers and gaming in true 10-bit HDR quality.

Thanks to a new image processor called Spectra 570, the Snapdragon 780G 5G should also be able to process images from three cameras at the same time. With a new architecture for processing recordings in low light, which is supposed to provide even better pictures in poor light conditions. Among other things, there is also the option of recording videos with HDR10 + support and also creating 4K videos and photos with HDR.

A new Neural Processing Unit (NPU) with a capacity of 12 TOPs should also ensure faster processing of data from the field of artificial intelligence. Qualcomm states that the first devices based on the new Snapdragon 780G should go on sale in the second quarter of 2021.
