RTX 50 Super: Nvidia delays release

The new super models of the RTX 50 graphics cards are apparently ready. At least one board partner should have already received the hardware. But high memory costs are now apparently forcing Nvidia to delay the release.

Graphics cards already delivered

The next graphics cards from Nvidia are apparently in the starting blocks. After it was said at the beginning of the year that there would be no super models of the Blackwell generation at all, it became clear at the beginning of June that a release of the variants with more memory was now planned. The super models of the RTX 50 Super series are now apparently finished and have apparently already been sent to at least one board partner. However, the official start of sales has been delayed indefinitely.

The reason for the current delivery stop is said to be the sharp increase in costs for the required memory modules. The new versions, including the RTX 5080 Super, RTX 5070 Ti Super and RTX 5070 Super, will be equipped with denser GDDR7 memory chips. They offer a capacity of three gigabytes per chip. This allows a significant increase in video memory without having to adjust the memory bus configuration. A benefit for end users is increased performance in memory-intensive applications. One disadvantage, however, is a significantly higher purchase price.

Costs are increasing enormously

The current cost structure is now apparently causing problems. As VideoCardz reports, a single chip with three gigabytes currently costs between 60 dollars (around 52 euros) and 70 dollars (around 61 euros). For comparison: a regular module with two gigabytes only costs around 20 dollars (around 17 euros). Although the new chips only offer 50 percent more capacity, they are about three times more expensive to procure. For a graphics card that requires six or eight such modules, the production costs increase by several hundred euros.

Nvidia has therefore instructed the board partners to postpone the sale until the market situation stabilizes. One reason for the poor availability and high price of the three gigabyte modules is the high demand in the professional sector. Nvidia also uses the memory components in highly profitable products for AI infrastructure. Models like the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell or Rubin CPX have priority when allocating scarce resources. For gamers, this means that they will have to wait longer for the super variants of the RTX 50 graphics cards.

More power consumption expected

In addition to the higher costs, the new memory modules also entail increased energy requirements. Early entries in a Seasonic power supply calculator indicate that the power consumption of the Super models increases noticeably. The RTX 5080 Super should require up to 415 watts. This corresponds to an increase of 55 watts compared to the standard model. Since the number of computing cores remains unchanged according to current information, the higher power consumption primarily results from the new memory design.

To justify the increased energy requirements, engineers could slightly increase the clock speeds of the GPUs. However, Nvidia has not shared any official information yet. There is also no new schedule for the official market launch of the super series. The expensive memory chips are delaying the launch of the new GPUs.
