Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, will meet with Samsung to produce AI semiconductor chips

ChatGPT has been on everyone’s thoughts for the past year. It is a next-generation AI-powered chatbot that can provide more thorough responses and maintain a conversation with the user. It was created by OpenAI, a corporation based in the United States that is currently the world’s most important AI company. It also underpins the Microsoft Copilot AI chatbot. According to reports, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman travelled to South Korea to meet with officials from chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix.

OpenAI’s CEO could form a chip business with Samsung and SK Hynix to produce AI-focused semiconductor chips

According to a new Reuters report, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will be visiting South Korea. He is expected to meet with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to discuss a prospective agreement to produce semiconductor chips specialized for AI processing. Sam Altman appears to be attempting to raise billions of dollars to fund a chip company in which chip foundries collaborate with OpenAI. Samsung and SK Hynix both manufacture HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) chips, which are used in high-performance computing circuits that conduct most AI-related activities. Sam Altman is expected to meet with the CEO of Samsung Semiconductor, as well as the heads of Samsung Foundry (which manufactures semiconductor chips for other companies), Samsung Memory (which designs DRAM, HBM, and NAND flash chips), and System LSI (which designs application processors such as Exynos).

While SK Hynix solely designs and sells memory chips, Samsung Electronics may produce semiconductor chips through its Samsung Foundry division. It is one of only three businesses in the world that can produce 7nm or higher sophisticated semiconductor chips. Currently, TSMC leads the market, with Samsung Foundry coming in second. Intel has also lately begun producing sophisticated processors for other companies through its newly established IFS (Intel Foundry Services) subsidiary.

SK Hynix recently revealed its intention to become a “total AI memory provider.” It unexpectedly reported a profit in the fourth quarter of 2023, and the company’s prospects for the next quarters appear to be positive. Samsung Semiconductor also expects the memory market to revive following a year of a glut that made company post’s first ever loss in history.
