For Huawei, there are few bright spots these days in view of the recently tightened US sanctions. At least in terms of displays, the Chinese company can now hope, because Samsung has apparently received permission from the US authorities to supply Huawei.
As reported by the Japanese business service Nikkei Asia, Samsung Display has received a license from the US government that allows the company to deliver its panels to Huawei Technologies. Presumably, this makes it the first Asian manufacturer to receive the green light from the USA to continue its trade relations with Huawei.
An official confirmation is still pending, but Nikkei claims to have learned from a well-informed source that Samsung’s display division is again allowed to deliver some products to Huawei. Huawei is actually one of the main customers of Samsung Display since OLED panels from Samsung are often installed in the high-end smartphones from the Chinese manufacturer.
It is not yet certain that Huawei will really be able to use Samsung displays for its smartphones again, as the sanctions mean that the Chinese company currently does not have the opportunity to purchase the additional components such as memory and processors required to build the devices. Among other things, Samsung and SK Hynix are currently not allowed to deliver memory to Huawei. About a month ago, Intel and AMD received permission from the US authorities to supply Huawei with certain chips again. As in the case of Samsung Display, it is currently unclear which specific products the two CPU suppliers are allowed to provide.
According to previous knowledge, Huawei began to store components on a large scale almost two years ago. The company wanted to arm itself against the impending sanctions that have now been imposed and the massive effects of the embargo. However, these stocks should not be sufficient for an unlimited period, especially since smartphone technology is constantly developing and quite very rapidly.
