Samsung Galaxy S8 And Note 8 Are Now Compatible With Android 11

The Samsung Galaxy S8, and Galaxy Note 8 are now unofficially compatible with Android 11. Indeed, the official builds of the Project Sakura Custom ROM are now available for both phones.

Many devices, including those from Samsung, have already received the Android 11 update. However, some older devices are not so lucky, since official update support only lasts a few years. This is for example the case of the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8, which only received Android 9 so far.

However, thanks to Project Sakura 5.R, the custom ROM built on the basis of LineageOS 18.1, those who own any of the three Samsung smartphones listed above can now try Android 11 on their phones. However, first, you have to make sure you own a model with an Exynos processor, which are the ones sold in Europe.

Sakura Project Offers Some Devices With Android 11

Since this is a preview ROM, you can expect a few bugs here and there. The developers have reported that the Hardware Composer (HWC) is not working properly and that you cannot use your smartphone as a Wi-Fi hotspot to share your Internet connection. In addition, HDR video playback is also impossible, and the Wi-Fi direct feature does not work.

Regardless of some missing features, it’s pretty exciting to see the Android community keep older devices like the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 alive, even we would have preferred the 5 years of system update support like on iOS. The new versions of Project Sakura bring all the basic functionality of Android 11 while providing a clean and uncluttered user interface, with a variety of customizations.

If you are not afraid to tweak your phone and want to try out the new features of Android 11, you can update your Galaxy S8 from this page, and your Galaxy Note 8 from this page. As a reminder, you must have an unlocked bootloader and a custom restore like TWRP installed on your device to flash this ROM.
