Samsung joins RISE: a RISC-V software development ecosystem

In order to create and promote a cutting-edge semiconductor ecosystem, Samsung Electronics has announced that it has joined RISE. RISE is a RISC-V Software Ecosystem, an open-source software development effort. The South Korean company is now a member of RISE’s operating board of directors. Other industry behemoths like Google, Intel, MediaTek, Nvidia, and Qualcomm are also part of this project.

The RISE project is an initiative of the Linux Foundation. It was introduced just recently. The main purpose of this project is to bring various hardware as well as software firms under one roof. In this way, the production of high-performance and power-efficient RISC-V CPU cores could be achieved. All the participants will help the project like the development of an OS and software solutions for computers and devices based on RISC-V compatible processors. such processes can be utilized in data centers, wearables, home appliances, connected vehicles, and smartphones.

In contrast to the AMD’s x64, Intel’s x86, and ARM’s AArch64, RISC-V is an open-source instruction set. It is thought to be the direction of computer’s future. In order to create their own chips without having to pay ARM a licensing charge, a number of companies, including Qualcomm, are trying to sever ties with ARM’s design. According to the Linux Foundation Europe, the project’s participants will provide both engineering expertise as well as financial support to help meet the expected software demands of the project’s steering committee.

Samsung has experience in designing chips. Its System LSI is associated with chip design. Whereas teh chips are manufactured by Samsung Founjdry. It can help RISE to actively engage in the mass adoption of RISC-V. The South Korean company will subsequently be able to create chips using the open-source instruction set. As we previously noted, ARM has dramatically altered its terms, which could eventually have an impact on Exynos chips.
