Samsung To Launch New Exynos 1080 Soon For Midrange Smartphones

With the Exynos 1080, Samsung plans to introduce a new, probably surprisingly powerful chip for smartphones as early as mid-November, which will power the next generation of mid-range models from the Korean electronics giant.

The Chinese subsidiary of Samsung recently announced a launch event for the so-called Exynos 1080 for November 12, 2020. The chip will then be presented to the public for the first time in Shanghai, although it is highly unusual for Samsung to set up its own presentation event for the “heart” of its mid-range smartphones.

One of the reasons could be that they want to score more points against their Chinese competitors in Huawei’s home country because they are currently unable to continue producing their in-house processors. Against the background of the US embargo against Huawei, Samsung wants to attract attention to the presentation of the Exynos 1080 in front of the Chinese audience. The Exynos 1080 is not the new absolute high-end SoC from the production of the Korean company. Instead, the chip will probably succeed in the current Exynos 980, which is built into some mid-range devices and has an integrated 5G modem. It is also conceivable that the Exynos 1080 will end up in the devices of third-party manufacturers because Vivo partly uses the predecessor in its smartphones.

In terms of performance, the Exynos 1080 could set new standards for mid-range smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy A series. According to the first benchmark leaks, the chip will probably even offer more performance than the current Snapdragon 865 from Qualcomm, which is used in current high-end models. It is conceivable that Samsung will set new standards in terms of performance in the mid-range with the chip if the SoC can meet the high expectations.
