Samsung to offer battery upgrade for its phones

Compared to Chinese manufacturers, Samsung lags behind when it comes to battery capacity in its Galaxy smartphones. But that could change in 2026. The company is finally planning to use more modern battery technology.

Samsung left behind in the battery race

For many users, battery capacity is an important criterion when choosing a smartphone. It determines how long a device can be used before it needs to be recharged. However, when used very intensively, many modern devices cannot make it through the day without having to be plugged in.

Chinese manufacturers such as OnePlus and Honor are already installing batteries with 6,000 mAh or more in their phones. In comparison, Samsung’s current flagship, the Galaxy S24, has a rather small battery of 4,000 mAh. But with the Galaxy S26 series, which will come onto the market in 2026, they want to close the gap.

Planned use of newer technology

These batteries are a lot denser than the lithium-ion units currently installed by the Koreans in their Galaxy smartphones. Modern technology can store around 10 to 15 percent more energy with the same battery size. There is currently no information about the planned battery capacities of the S26 models.

However, if you add 15 percent to the capacities of the current devices, you end up with 4,600 mAh for the Galaxy S26, 5,635 mAh for the S26 Plus and 5,700 mAh for the S26 Ultra. Although this still doesn’t quite match the numbers of the Chinese competition, these values ​​would still be a significant improvement. If one also assumes that the chips that will be used in future cell phones will be even more efficient than the SoCs currently installed, the running time of the devices would increase even further.

Introducing the S25 series

First of all, Samsung will present its new Galaxy S25 models as part of an Unpacked event next Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
