SanDisk Releases Firmware Update To Fix Extreme Pro Series SSDs

SanDisk is currently working to fix issues with some of its SSDs. This also applies to dealing with the return of defective storage media. Customers are not always satisfied with this.

As the US magazine Ars Technica recently reported, the external SSDs of the Extreme and Extreme Pro series are affected by the problem. After all: After the relatively long waiting period, a solution is now imminent for at least some of the devices. The manufacturer has announced the availability of a firmware update that should fix the underlying bug.

According to SanDisk, buyers of SSDs of the series mentioned that were produced before November 2022 do not have to worry. All bugs have so far occurred in models that belonged to the younger production batches. However, in case of doubt, data loss will remain with the user, and there is no liability on the part of the storage producer. However, SanDisk and its mother company Western Digital at least want to ensure that customers are refunded the purchase price if they have problems – this is the case in the company’s online store anyway.

retail with problems

However, very few customers buy their products there. Retail plays a much larger role here. and some users report that retailers just offered them a replacement device, which then came up with the same error. On the part of the manufacturer, however, they at least want to make sure that a return is also possible here.

The announced update will be aimed at the 4-terabyte versions of the storage media. However, there are also error messages from consumers who have purchased a 2-terabyte version. SanDisk has not yet explained whether the firmware update will also help them or whether a correspondingly adapted variant will come.

What exactly causes the error is not yet known. According to users’ reports, the difficulties mostly occurred when there was a prolonged writing process on the SSDs. Then the memory was generally recognized by the operating system, but the file system could no longer be mounted. In some cases, the rescue with a file system recovery tool worked, but ultimately only sometimes.
