Sony cancels Android 17 for Xperia 10 VI, breaks upgrade promises

When the Xperia 10 VI was launched two years ago, Sony actually announced that it would offer operating system upgrades for the mid-range smartphone for three years. Now the update to Android 17 is being canceled with weak justification.

Xperia 10 VI should receive three OS upgrades

Sony began rolling out the current Android 17 as an update to its smartphones in September. This applies, among other things, to the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, although the list of supported devices even back then contained a gap. The Sony Xperia 10 VI, launched in 2024, was not included.

Like Sony now in one Notice on his website explained, there will actually be no upgrade to Android 17 for the Xperia 10 VI. The company cites “technical obstacles due to the device’s memory configuration” as the reason for this. Apparently it is therefore not possible to offer customers a user experience with Android 17 that the company considers to be sufficient.

Exact reasons for upgrade stop unclear

Sony simply hasn’t provided any more detailed information yet. Like the colleagues from Android Authority Note, the Sony Xperia 10 VI, like its successor, was delivered from the factory with 128 gigabytes of internal flash memory. It can’t be due to the memory capacity that Sony doesn’t want to offer Android 17 with the Xperia 10 VI. The type of memory used shouldn’t actually be a hurdle either. Even if the device is equipped with flash memory that has a UFS 2.2 connection, an upgrade should be possible, after all, some other manufacturers offer Android 17 for devices with slightly slower flash memory.

It is conceivable that Sony chose a configuration when partitioning the memory that makes it difficult to update the Xperia 10 VI to Android 17 without major effort. The company refers to a “thorough technical review” due to which the update is being dispensed with. The company apologized for not being able to keep the promise of three OS upgrades made at launch. The supply of security updates should not be affected by the decision and will therefore take place as planned over a period of four years after the start of sales. In addition to the Sony Xperia 10 VI, no other devices from the manufacturer are affected by the loss of the Android 17 upgrade.
