Sony Will Keep the PlayStation Store Operational for PS3 and PS Vita

Sony announced to shut down its commerce functionality PSP’s store on July 22nd, as planned earlier, but will keep running the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita digital storefront open “for the foreseeable future.”

In a blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan said:

“Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021, as planned,”

The company previously announced that it would close its digital storefronts for its legacy consoles at the end of March. This decision was taken due to “a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on.”

After receiving feedback on their earlier decision, the company was left with no choice but to revisit its decision. Sony would keep up its PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices and will “continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.”
