Starlink warned: Consumer protection fights against price increases

The satellite internet provider Starlink has changed tariffs and drastically increased prices without the consent of its customers. Users suddenly pay significantly more than agreed. The company is now facing legal consequences.

Starlink secretly increases prices

The satellite internet provider Starlink increased its prices in July 2026. Customers of the “Private Household 200 Mbit/s” tariff were informed by email that the monthly costs would increase from 50 to 55 euros. The company cites increased operating costs and the expansion of the satellite constellation as reasons. The global travel tariff was also recently canceled. Starlink operates a network of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit and provides broadband internet worldwide, especially in regions without fiber optic connections. In addition to comparatively high hardware costs, the billing practice is now also causing criticism.

According to the Lower Saxony Consumer Center (via Caschy), complaints are increasing. Accordingly, contracts were sometimes converted to the more expensive “Private Household Max” tariff without consent. In these cases, Starlink even charged 75 euros per month instead of 55 euros.

Anger over unwanted tariff changes

Some customers noticed the change in advance in the invoice preview and were able to switch back. Others only noticed the upgrade after the debit was made. The consumer advice center has therefore warned Starlink. An automatic change to a more expensive tariff without express consent is not permitted under German law. There is also criticism of the regular price increase. The corresponding clauses in the general terms and conditions are formulated too imprecisely, so that the requirements for price adjustments are not understandable for customers.

Starlink is part of Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX and provides internet access to millions of people worldwide. Customers should check their bills and rates. In the event of unwanted changes, it is recommended to dispute the billing and request a refund.
