The Yellowstone Effect: Are Spinoffs More Impactful Than New Releases?

The Yellowstone universe is once again entering a new era. Taylor Sheridan’s Western empire is evolving once again with the launch of multiple new and confirmed spinoffs. With the shows being so successful, it’s clear that modern audiences aren’t just falling in love with stories; they are instead falling in love with different worlds and universes.

Studios are Focusing on Spinoffs More

Studios are showing an increasing focus on spinoffs, and it seems that audiences are now starting to lean toward depth rather than novelty. A clear example would be Game of Thrones. After the series ended, HBO doubled down on the world of Westeros with House of the Dragon, and a whole new show is currently in progress. 

Franchise-first releases aren’t just limited to TV either. In music, bands are using trilogies to explore themes with even more ambition. Lord of the Lost, a gothic band from Germany are working on a trilogy project called OPVS NOIR. In iGaming, the Big Bass franchise has grown to 18 games, including the newer Big Bass Hold and Spinner slot game. Adopting this approach allows developers to take the classic Big Bass format that people know and love, while adding new mechanics to keep gameplay interesting. As there’s already a foundational level of interest with the series, it’s easier for people to go into the games, already knowing what to expect.

When you look across iGaming, music, and television, it’s clear that audiences are starting to appreciate worlds and in-depth concepts over one-off releases.

Upcoming Yellowstone Spinoffs

As of 2026, there are currently numerous Yellowstone spinoffs in the works. You have Marshals, The Madison, Dutton Ranch, 1944, and 6666. It’s not always about expanding the storyline, either, as some of them expand the universe, showing different families that might not have a direct connection to the Duttons. 

In a way, things like this help to expand the universe more authentically. With that said, shows like Marshals, which is due to launch on March 1st, are a direct sequel. It follows Kayce Dutton as he steps into his new life as a Marshal in Montana. By embracing the natural storyline of the character, it’s also possible to adopt a focus that’s more on law enforcement and justice, rather than the hardships of running a ranch. The Madison, which stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, however, is based on a family from New York, offering a new perspective on the cultural elements that have helped to define the franchise so far.

With Sheridan’s 1944 set to explore the Duitton family and their activities during the Second World War, we are also seeing historical depth being added, with each storyline expanding the depth of the characters we know and love. Examples like this also broaden the horizons for characters who might not be with us anymore, making their demise even more impactful.

With The Walking Dead also having numerous expansions within the universe, it’s clear that shows did explore the idea of spinoffs before Yellowstone, but with that said, the critical acclaim of Yellowstone and its lasting appeal could have cemented the idea for developers that spinoffs are, in fact, more impactful than navigating whole new storylines with unknown characters.
