Twitter shuts down Periscope after 6 years

Twitter shuts down Periscope on Thursday. The app lasted only for 6 years, popularizing live streaming from smartphones. The app is now removed both from Google and Apple app stores.

On its final farewell, the Periscope tweeted:

We leave you with our gratitude for all the creators and viewers who brighten the Periscope community. We hope to see you all live on Twitter,

After its closure, it’s unlikely that devices still having the app would get its earlier features.

The company, previously, hinted that it will shut down Periscope.

The Periscope website will still be accessible with an archive of public broadcasts, whereas users will still be able to download their data through the micro-blogging platform.

This doesn’t mean that live streaming is no more part of Twitter. Users would still be able to go live but with Twitter itself. To go live on Twitter, you can tap the Tweet composer icon, tap the camera icon and select “Live” from the bottom menu.

Periscope also added:

Stay tuned for more Twitter features for creators like Spaces, newsletters, and improvements to Live broadcasting,

Creators can rest assured that Twitter is not going to ignore them. But would come stronger than ever.
