U.S. Spy Agencies Use AI to Declassify JFK Files, Reveal Efficiency—and Errors

The director of the national intelligence services, Tulsi Gabbard, has for the first time publicly confirmed that her authority started artificial intelligence to decide on the approval of documents from the investigation files to murder John F. Kennedy. At an Amazon Web Services Conference, she explained that thousands of pages could be processed much faster using AI tools than by manual effort. The JFK files were released in March 2025, just two months after Donald Trump’s second term.
Around 80,000 pages were published – but without hoped -for groundbreaking revelations about the attack of November 22, 1963. The publication was based on a campaign promise of Trump. As the Associated Press reports, the AI mission is part of a wider initiative under Gabbard’s leadership to modernize US intelligence agencies. The former congress member from Hawaii, who previously considered critic of the secret service establishment, now coordinates 18 different news services as a director.
More efficient by automation
Gabard described the AI technology as a “Game Chang” for the secret service group. “We published thousands of tens of thousands of documents in the context of the attacks on JFK and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. And we were able to do this with the help of AI tools much faster than before, where people had to look through each of these pages,” she said when she appeared at the Cloud Conference of Amazon.
The AI systems can search specifically for information that could be sensitive to living family members, making an otherwise lengthy process considerably. Experts estimated that the review would have taken several months or even years without support. According to Gabard’s information, “10,000 hours of media content that would normally need eight people 48 hours to search through can now be processed one hour by using some of the AI tools”.
Data protection breakdown reveals weaknesses
Despite the increase in efficiency, the publication showed a serious weak point of AI-based processing. In some documents, there were no need for the protection of private information. Social security numbers, dates of birth and births of former congress employees and other people who are still living were unintentionally disclosed.
