Not only the Windows 11 update from patch day May but also the cumulative security update for Windows 10 leads to unforeseen problems for some users. The errors have not yet been confirmed by Microsoft. In the various forums and also in the Microsoft Feedback Hub, there is a clear trend – the update KB5026361 for Windows 10 has introduced some new problems.
According to the report by the online magazine Neowin, the problems start with installations that are not possible, go through blue screens of death to sudden system restarts.
Update KB5026361, released as part of Patch Day, fixes a number of security issues and should therefore be applied urgently.
A majority of the error reports from users concern Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) errors for Windows 10 showing an error code “PROCESS1 INITIALIZATION FAILED”. That could indicate there’s a problem with the bootcat file, according to an older Microsoft article on the error code.
This problem occurs when the Bootcat.cache file is corrupted or when the Bootcat.cache file size has changed since the last successful boot. Therefore, in an older support post, Microsoft recommended using a Windows installation disc to boot and deleting the bootcat.cache file to fix the problem. It is still unknown whether this is also effective. It is better now to wait and see how Microsoft comments on the problems.
In addition, those affected reported that they receive the error code 0x800f0922 when they try to install the update on their computer. The update can then be applied after several attempts. Currently, in the Windows Release Health Dashboard, no error description is to be found and therefore no recommended interim solution – so you will have to be patient.
