Data miners have discovered evidence of a new version of the online role-playing game World of Warcraft in server data. The Classic Plus project that fans have long been demanding could be hidden under the code name Camelot.
Evidence of Camelot is increasing
In the server data of the developer Blizzard, data miners recently found entries for a project called World of Warcraft Camelot. The discovery fuels rumors that the company is working on an expanded version of the classic online role-playing game. Fans of the game usually refer to the concept of such a new edition with additional content as Classic Plus. The data discovered in the code specifically refers to patch 1.60 from 2006. Licenses for an Epic Edition and a Heroic Edition were also found in the system. This suggests a completely independent product that stands out from the modern main version of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Blizzard has not yet commented on the information.
Action against private servers
How PC gamers reported, the current finds match the recent activities of the Californian developer. The company recently invited well-known content creators to its headquarters under a confidentiality agreement. At the same time, Blizzard recently took legal action against various operators of private servers. Projects such as Ascension WoW and Turtle WoW, which independently expanded the original gameplay to include new functions, received corresponding cease-and-desist letters. The stringent approach leads to the conclusion that the developer currently wants to create space for its own, comparable offer on the market. Such a project directly combines the nostalgic feeling of playing with new challenges.
Waiting for official details
The current version of WoW Classic is getting closer and closer to the current main game through constant expansions. That’s why many long-time users are looking for a fresh alternative. A model modeled on Old School RuneScape, in which an old save game is developed further independently of the main version, is considered a popular approach in the community. The developer has canceled its own in-house trade fair, BlizzCon, for the current year. Instead, announcements are made at industry-standard events such as Gamescom in Cologne or via direct presentations on the Internet. An early presentation of World of Warcraft Camelot remains possible. At the beginning of the year, producer Holly Longdale hinted that news would soon be coming to the players.
