You can now send photos in HD quality on WhatsApp

The popular messaging platform WhatsApp is ready to add another feature for its users. Reportedly, the company will enable users to share high-quality images across the platform. Currently, the feature is accessible to a few users with the latest beta version of the app.

Usually, messaging apps compress media files before moving them from one place to another. In this way, the strain on servers is reduced. Similarly, users can save data as well as storage space on their smartphones. this is a traditional approach for most of messaging platforms.

Although there are other methods to share original quality content. WhatsApp allows its users to share photos as documents in order to avoid compression. However, this method uses more internet data. Users don’t have a preview of images even after they have downloaded the file. On the other hand, sending photos using the standard approach, doesn’t justify the quality of the images. In this way, the smartphone camera improvements introduced by the companies are negated by the platform.

WhatsApp will introduce optional HD photos

Well, the company is working on a solution for this. Reportedly, a new ‘HD quality’ option will be introduced. It has been spotted by WABetaInfo in the WhatsApp beta version 2.23.12.13 on Android and version 23.11.0.76 on iOS. With this new feature, users have the choice to send photos in either standard quality or HD quality. The option is presented via a new button presented in the top toolbar that appears prior to sending an image.

The new button presents the users with information like the resolution of the image. Users can either select the HD option or the standard one. After making the preferred choice, users can share the photos across the platform. One thing to notice here is that the images sent in HD quality will show an HD label in chats.

Well, the default setup of the app sends images of standard quality. It indicates that the users will have to select the HD quality option whenever required. It might happen that the company introduces an option for users through which they can select their default preference. Currently, the feature is in the early stage of beta testing. It could get some changes before making its way to the stable release for all users.
