YouTube Music is developing a “Trim Silence” feature

The tech giant Google has shut down its Google Podcasts app. Slowly and gradually YouTube Music is being updated to fill the gap left with this change. Reportedly, the app is set to receive a new feature named ‘Trim Silence.”

Well, this information comes from 9to5Google that was discovered during an APK teardown of the YouTube Music app’s version v6.43.52. This finding places YouTube Music as the preferred podcast platform within the Google ecosystem at the same time as the Google Podcasts app is being phased down.

Trim Silence feature

You might be wondering what is this feature about? Well, this is a feature that is commonly found in several major podcasts app. It enables users to skip the silence stretches of the episodes automatically. In this way, the playback time is effectively shortened. The above-mentioned version of the app includes code strings that refer to labels like ‘Trim Silence.’ In addition to this, the code mentions the description “Skip stretches of silence during episodes.” So, the function of this feature is pretty obvious.

YouTube Music is basically a music streaming platform that isn’t dedicated for podcasts. Over the last few years, the company has been enhancing its strengths in the podcasts sector. In an effort to attract more users to podcasts, the company offered features like automatic downloads for new episodes and subscription to podcasts through RSS feeds.

Currently, the feature isn’t available within the YouTube Music app. It might arrive soon via an app update. Previously, Google notified its users that Google Podcasts can only be accessed until March 2024. By July 2024, users can migrate their subscriptions and playlists to YouTube Music app. An alternative option for podcast fans is to export their data from Google Podcasts and transfer it into a different podcast application that accepts OPML uploads.
