ZTE Axon 20 5G Under Display Camera Proves To Be Poor On DxOMark

The first under-display camera smartphone, namely the ZTE Axon 20 5G (which from the end of December is also available for purchase in various markets has unveiled some disastrous story.

If you are wondering why no manufacturer except for ZTE has adopted this under-display camera technology yet, the answer comes today from DxOMark: the selfie cam hidden under the screen is a pioneering but definitely premature choice because as it is implemented on the ZTE Axon 20 5G it does not is able to guarantee acceptable shots.

The reason is easily understood and does not so much concern the quality of the sensor, but the difficulties it is subjected to having to collect the light that filters from that portion of the screen where the pixel grain is less fine – a necessity that generates an “effect” postage stamp “on the display at the selfie cam, more or less visible depending on the backgrounds and shades displayed.

The analysis carried out by DxOMark focused solely on the front camera, and the result is disastrous, with an overall score of 26 points that plunges ZTE Axon 20 into the abyss of the general classification. The only advantages guaranteed by the selfie cam are generally stable exposure and focus. For the rest, the list of defects is instead endless: the colour rendering is often completely “busted” with unnatural and dominant skin tones and visible colour shades, the image noise in both photos and videos is constantly very high, while the dynamic range is extremely limited.

In short, there is more than one valid reason if the other manufacturers have decided to stall: right now the technology is evidently still immature, and to bring it to the market you need a qualitative leap. Who knows if it is not ZTE with its new Axon 30 Pro, a flagship that will re-propose the selfie cam under the screen.
