Google Launches Pixel 8a For $589

Pixel 8a

Google has made the Google Pixel 8a official amid the hustle and bustle surrounding Apple’s new iPads. This year’s mid-range smartphone from the US internet company is now available, with Android 14 on the latest hardware at a slightly more affordable price.

Basic version is 40 euros more expensive than its predecessor

The Google Pixel 8a costs at least 549 euros in Germany, although the manufacturer only offers the edition available for 609 euros with internal memory doubled to 256 gigabytes in black. The other color variants in Porcelain (beige), Sky (light blue) and Mint (light green) are only available with 128 GB. The previous model started in this country for 509 euros.

You also have to consider whether buying the Pixel 8a is worth it, because the Pixel 8, which is very similar in many respects, currently only costs 569 euros at a number of established retailers in this country, according to the WinFuture price comparison. Among other things, the camera equipment is better and there are several other advantages over the Pixel 8a.

Full HD OLED panel with up to 120 Hertz

The Google Pixel 8a has a 6.1-inch OLED display with 2400×1080 pixels resolution and a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hertz. The panel has a Gorilla Glass 3 cover and is said to be able to achieve a maximum brightness of up to 1400 candela when outputting HDR content. The panel has even more rounded corners than the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

The Google Tensor G3 is at work under the hood, i.e. the same octa-core chip that is also in the flagship models. Whether Google will again achieve savings through different packaging, as with the previous model series, is currently still open, but this is certainly to be expected. The chip delivers more than adequate performance, but cannot quite keep up with the current top SoCs from Qualcomm.

Always eight gigabytes of RAM, same camera as Pixel 7a

There are basically eight gigabytes of RAM installed, which is a welcome increase compared to the previous model. The internal flash memory is 128 or 256 GB, but “only” connected via UFS 3.1, which is no different for the more expensive models in the Google smartphone series. A memory expansion is of course not planned here – which is typical for Google.

The camera system remains completely unaffected when compared to the Google Pixel 7a. The same 64-megapixel camera with quad-phase detection autofocus and a pixel edge length of 0.8 micrometers and F/1.89 aperture is installed, which was also in the old model. The ultra-wide-angle camera also remains unchanged and offers 13 megapixels, a 120-degree wide field of view and an F/2.2 aperture. At least the main camera also has an optical image stabilizer implemented in hardware.

Thanks to the high CPU performance, Google can also offer all sorts of AI functions and other software tricks in the Pixel 8a to make better photos possible. The features known from the Pixel 8 (Pro) such as the magic eraser and the like will also be available here.

The power is supplied by a 4492mAh battery, which can be quickly charged with up to 30 watts via a USB-C port. However, Google does not include the appropriate power supply in the scope of delivery. Other features include NFC, Bluetooth 5.3 and IP67 certification, so the Pixel 8a is considered to be largely dustproof and waterproof.

Google is now offering the Pixel 8a for pre-order and wants to be able to deliver from May 13, 2024. New Google smartphones are also available for pre-order at MediaMarkt and Saturn, and you can get a bonus of 150 euros when you buy an old smartphone.
