RTX 5090 Falls Behind RTX 4090 in Compute Benchmark

The results of further benchmarks are becoming increasingly clear that the new graphics card generation of NVIDIA cannot always meet the high expectations. In the GPU Compute Benchmark from Passmark, both Blackwell cards land behind their respective predecessors. Nvidia
Blackwell cannot completely convince
Since the start of the new GeForce graphics cards, there have been news about the GPUs every day. In many cases, however, they are not fully positive. In the end, there was a lot of excitement about poor availability, some of which are absurdly high manufacturer prices of up to 4,900 euros and problems with image failures that Nvidia is now investigating.
Benchmarks also provided a mixed picture of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080. In most cases, the GPUs were able to achieve better results than their predecessors, but sometimes the lead was significantly lower than hoped. In the GPU Compute Benchmark from Passmark The Blackwell cards now even land significantly behind their predecessors.
New GPUs unexpectedly weak
The test measures the average number of arithmetic operations per second. With 23,094 points, the RTX 5090 beats the 21,130 points of the RTX 4080 with just over nine percent lead, but is more than 18 percent behind the performance of the RTX 4090 with 27,275 points.

A similar picture shows itself in the GeForce RTX 5080. With 19,250 points, it also has a narrow performance lead of less than three percent before the RTX 4070 Ti with 18,738 points. With their result, however, the smaller of the two currently available Blackwell cards with a clear deficit remains just under ten percent behind the value of their direct predecessor.
Is it worth buying?
With a sample size of 19 copies for the RTX 5090 and 143 for the RTX 5080 at the time of publishing this article, however, the performance values only have a limited meaning. Nevertheless, there is no significant superiority of the new Blackwell cards – on the contrary. As the GPUs do in practice, however, is another question and always depends on the specific usage scenario.
Even if the results do not mean that the RTX 5090 and 5080 are generally less powerful than the previous models of the 4000 series, the benchmark provides an additional reason for previously undecided, possibly refraining from buying the GPUs. The current moon prices should also not provide any arguments for purchasing.
