Apple Partners with Alibaba and Baidu to Bring AI Features to China by May

Apple is gearing up to introduce its AI features to the Chinese market as early as May, according to a recent Bloomberg report. To navigate China’s strict state regulations, Apple is collaborating with local giants Alibaba and Baidu to adapt its AI platform for the region.

Dedicated teams in both China and the U.S. are working to tailor Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” platform to meet the country’s unique regulatory requirements. Alibaba is playing a key role in the project, reportedly creating an on-device system to analyze and adjust Apple’s AI models for Chinese users across iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. This system will come equipped with built-in censorship and filtering features to align with government mandates. Baidu, on the other hand, will handle specific features like Visual Intelligence for the upcoming iPhone 16.

The Chinese version of Apple Intelligence will look quite different from the one available in the U.S. While the U.S. version integrates on-device capabilities, server-based processing (Private Cloud Compute), and ChatGPT functionality, the Chinese version will heavily depend on these local partnerships. Alibaba’s software will act as an intermediary layer, enabling government-directed content filtering without users being aware.

One important distinction is that these AI features will only be available on Apple devices sold within China. Devices purchased outside China and brought into the country won’t have access to this localized AI system. Although Apple has submitted necessary materials for approval from Chinese regulators, it still has some hurdles to overcome before the features can officially launch.

This move comes as Apple faces declining sales in China, its largest market outside the U.S., where local smartphone brands have gained market share due in part to their strong AI offerings. By leveraging partnerships with Alibaba and Baidu, Apple hopes to re-establish its foothold in the competitive Chinese market.
