Apple’s Mac Pro, Once a Powerhouse, Is Reportedly Being Dicthed

Apple’s Mac Pro is becoming increasingly less important. Once the flagship for professional users, the desktop computer seems to have had its heyday. According to new reports, Apple is shelving the device for now.

The end of an era is looming

The Mac Pro, Apple’s flagship for professional users since 2006 and the company’s most powerful computer, is apparently losing importance in Apple’s product strategy. Because while the company is planning new MacBook Pros with OLED and touch, is launching a completely new cheap MacBook at the beginning of 2026 and the Mac Studio was equipped with the M4 Max chip at the beginning of the year, the large desktop computer from Cupertino is being put on the sidelines, at least for the time being.

Because how Bloomberg Reportedly, Apple is no longer working on an M4 Ultra chip that was intended for a new Mac Pro. Instead, the company is focusing on an M5 Ultra chip, which is currently only planned for a new Mac Studio. The Mac Studio is intended to represent both the present and the future of Apple’s professional desktop strategy. This decision is a potential game-changer and could mark the end of a nearly 20-year era in which the Mac Pro was synonymous with professional Mac performance.

The Mac Pro’s slow decline in importance

Originally introduced as an Intel-based replacement for the Power Mac range, the first model of the Mac Pro featured two dual-core Xeon processors and the distinctive rectangular chassis of the Power Mac G5. The first Mac Pro cost $2,499 when it was launched and was aimed at creative professionals, scientists and other users who needed maximum computing power.

With its modular design and eight RAM slots, it offered flexibility that was unique in the Mac product line. Then, in December 2013, Apple released a new cylindrical version of the Mac Pro, which was colloquially referred to as the “Trashcan Mac”. Back then, Apple promised twice the overall performance of the first generation with only an eighth of the volume. But the radical design turned out to be a failure.

The last significant update to the Mac Pro came in 2023 with the switch to the M2 Ultra chip. However, the current Mac Studio with its M4 Max has already left the Mac Pro behind. For many customers, this has made the Mac Pro redundant, as it is essentially a larger and more expensive Mac Studio with PCIe expansion slots. The current Mac Pro with M2 Ultra starts at 8,299 euros, while the Mac Studio with M4 Max is available for 2,299 euros and with M3 Ultra from 4,799 euros.

Uncertain future

With the lack of a Mac Pro update, users who rely on PCIe slots, internal storage expansion or long-term modularity will lose the only Mac option with meaningful internal upgradeability. Although Mac Studio is powerful, it offers little customization options for users. The Mac Pro remains on sale with the M2 Ultra chip, but its long-term usability, especially for professionals, is questionable.
