Google is planning a new Fitbit fitness tracker: for the first time with Wear OS
Google is apparently planning a new fitness tracker with Wear OS as a successor to the Fitbit Charge series. The software promises many smart functions, but the high power consumption of the operating system requires enormous optimization.
New tracker spotted at authorities
An unknown wearable from the manufacturer Goertek has undergone certification by the US regulatory authority FCC. The documents suggest that Google is working on this new fitness tracker. The device with model number G8BL6 has a display and apparently uses Wear OS. The producer Goertek is no stranger to the search engine company.
The company has already manufactured various generations of Pixel Buds as well as the current Fitbit Air in the past. A new wearable has previously appeared on advertising materials for Pixel smartphones and the Pixel Watch.

Evidence of Wear OS is increasing
As 9to5Google reported, the Android Debug Bridge was used during the test phase. This interface is used by developers to communicate with Android-based devices. The presence of the function is considered a strong indication that the tracker is running a customized version of Wear OS. Such a move could mean the end of Fitbit OS. The technical specifications show a clear focus on the fitness sector.
The wearable has a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNNS) module for precise location determination and Bluetooth Low Energy. The connection is made via an antenna integrated into the metal frame. A WLAN module, however, is completely missing, which is why data transfer to the Internet requires a paired smartphone.
Successor to the Fitbit Charge series
The lack of WiFi and the use of Wear OS require high energy efficiency in a small device. The operating system is considered power-hungry, while users of classic fitness trackers expect runtimes of several days. Google would have to heavily optimize the software for the new form factor. The new model could succeed the Fitbit Charge series.
Their last version was released in 2023 and came onto the market in the USA for 160 dollars (around 137 euros). It remains to be seen whether the device will appear under the Fitbit brand or as a new Pixel product. A fitness tracker with Wear OS combines smart functions with a compact design.
