Back to the Stone Age: Nasty YouTube bug limits resolution to 480p
Some users of the mobile YouTube app are currently complaining about a technical problem. Videos can suddenly only be played in a low resolution. Both users of the free version and premium subscribers are affected.
Low resolution on smartphone
Although Google continues to unlock new functions for YouTube Premium customers, the company recently increased the prices for the tariff significantly. Now app users on Android also have to deal with a bug that takes the viewing experience back to the Stone Age. Many users of the mobile YouTube app are currently faced with a technical limitation. The application limits the playback quality of videos for those affected to a maximum of 480p. The usual options for high-resolution streams are completely missing from the settings selection menu.
The problem occurs regardless of the tariff. Both free version users and paid YouTube Premium subscribers are reporting the error on platforms like Reddit. Playback via the browser, however, continues to work smoothly in full resolution. As Android Authority reported, the exact cause of the error is still unclear. An official statement from Google or the responsible developers is still pending.
Dynamic video compression
YouTube uses various compression methods such as VP9 or the newer AV1 codec to deliver videos. These technologies dynamically adjust the resolution based on the available bandwidth to avoid stuttering or dropouts. Normally, if the internet connection is slow, the system automatically defaults to lower levels such as 480p. In the current case, however, this also happens with fast internet.
Solutions for those affected
Anyone affected by the error can try various solutions. It has already helped some users to clear the app’s cache via the system settings. Afterwards, the options for higher resolutions reappeared in the menu, at least temporarily. However, other users report that the problem persists despite the measure. Until Google releases an official patch, affected viewers can only be patient or watch videos via the browser. An exact time for the release of an update has not yet been determined.
