Xbox Nano Controller: Honey, Microsoft has shrunk the gamepad

Smaller and lighter than most current smartphones: Microsoft’s new Xbox Nano Controller weighs just under 100 grams and is 13 centimeters wide. The gamepad, which will be available from November, still offers all 18 standard keys.

Compact gamepad introduced

Microsoft has officially announced the Xbox Nano Controller. The particularly small input device will appear on the market on November 4th for 49.99 euros and can be used pre-order now. Sales will start at the same time in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and numerous other countries worldwide. A maximum of five controllers can be purchased per order per account. The white model measures around 13 centimeters wide and weighs just under 100 grams. The gamepad is therefore smaller and lighter than most current smartphones. Microsoft is specifically targeting the design at younger gamers, people with smaller hands and users who are looking for a portable controller for travel. For example, for spontaneous rounds together in titles like Minecraft Dungeons II or Forza Horizon 6, said Microsoft.

Equipment and connections

Despite its small dimensions, the Xbox Nano Controller offers all 18 standard buttons. As Microsoft reports, the wireless connection can be made either via Xbox Wireless or Bluetooth. This means it can be used on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, Android, iOS and compatible smart TVs.

The manufacturer does not use a direct WLAN connection for cloud gaming in the model. The power supply is provided by a permanently installed battery, so that no batteries are needed anymore. Charging is via a USB-C port on the back. A suitable cable is not included. In addition, the pad is not compatible with previous charging stations for Xbox controllers.

Deviations from the standard model

With a price of just under 50 euros, the official recommended price of the controller is 15 euros cheaper than the standard model. In free trade, the regular controller is often even lower than the nano RRP. However, the Nano offshoot lacks drift-free joysticks with Hall effect or TMR technology. So you can look forward to the first practical and, above all, long-term tests. The new mini controller brings the usual layout into a very compact format.
