Eight years for Grand Theft Auto 6: The next game should come sooner

The wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 was extremely long, over eight years. But Rockstar Games has good news for fans: Thanks to the newly created technical basis, the studio’s next project should come onto the market much faster.

Hoping for shorter waiting times

The development studio Rockstar Games expects significantly shorter development cycles for future projects. After working on Grand Theft Auto 6 took more than eight years, the following game should appear much faster. The developers used the extended production time to create a new technical and structural basis. During the creation of the latest title, the company adjusted the way it worked. The workforce grew to more than 4,700 employees in twelve offices while the underlying technology was overhauled. The extensive investments in its own infrastructure should pay off for future games, so that the team does not have to start from scratch on every project. New engine as a solid foundation

As Bloomberg writes in a large report, those responsible see Grand Theft Auto 6 as a basis on which they can develop new content more quickly. Phil Hooker, who serves as Rockstar’s head of development, emphasizes the value of the new tools created and the teams built. This should allow the studio to complete tasks more quickly and produce content more efficiently in the future.

Hooker expects the studio to be able to build on the existing engine to grow in breadth rather than height and deliver engaging content in the future. Art director Aaron Garbut also confirms the approach. The team made fundamental changes during the current project, but will now maintain the established structure and not discard it.

Parallels to previous classics

By retaining the new tools, Rockstar Games could follow a strategy that has been successful in the past. After Grand Theft Auto 3 was released in 2001, it only took a year for its sequel, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, to hit the market. Back then, the studio was just building on work that had already been done. It remains uncertain whether Rockstar will aim for a similarly tight schedule for its next project. So far, the company has not announced which title the team will work on after the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for November 19, 2026. There is currently no confirmation of specific sequels.
