Patch day: 1,400 vulnerabilities and one exploited security hole

Another patch day with big numbers: Microsoft closes more than 1,400 security gaps. Windows 10 and 11 receive fresh updates – for Windows 11 24H2 in the Home and Pro editions it is the last regular security package.
Microsoft closes more than 1,400 security holes
A new month, a new major update package: Microsoft once again closed a record-breaking number of security vulnerabilities on October Patch Tuesday. Microsoft is eliminating 1,411 vulnerabilities in its products. The number refers to the entire software offering, not just Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Both operating systems receive the usual cumulative monthly updates. The package also includes patches for an already exploited Windows vulnerability and two other vulnerabilities that were already publicly known before the updates were published. Patch Day cannot therefore be classified as predominantly “harmless” this time.
Windows 11: Latest update for 24H2 Home and Pro
Update KB5127648 is available for Windows 11. Microsoft distributes it for versions 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2. For some users, the update also marks a farewell. The Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 24H2 reach the end of support with this patch day. The update bundles not only the new security fixes, but also improvements from the September updates. This includes the optional preview update, with which Microsoft had already prepared numerous new functions.
However, the fact that the changes are installed does not mean that they will be immediately visible on every computer. Many innovations remain initially deactivated and are only activated later. One of these changes affects the copilot button. In the future, it can also be configured so that it takes over the function of the right Ctrl key or opens the context menu. There are also improvements to Explorer, Bluetooth and screen magnifier as well as support for Emoji 17.0. When these functions appear on each device may vary.
Windows 10: Help for data backup
Windows 10 also receives an October package. For devices participating in the Extended Security Updates program, KB5126657 is available. It upgrades the system to build numbers 19045.7807 and 19044.7807 respectively. In addition to the security fixes, the update includes bug fixes. One of them concerns file version history: a problem had affected its use with external storage media. The patch is intended to eliminate the problem – and thus make a function that helps secure personal files usable again.
