Islamabad to Take Action Against Careem and Uber Ride-Hailing Services
After Punjab and Sindh, Islamabad also seized Careem and Uber ride-hailing services on Thursday 2 February 2017.
Three days back the governments of Punjab and Sindh stated ride-hailing services by Careem and Uber as ‘illegal’. Today, authorities in Islamabad seized some vehicles driven by Careem captains. Uber, however, as not providing their ride-hailing services in Islamabad/Rawalpindi didn’t have any effect of this incident.
The deputy commissioner Islamabad issued a notification to the concerned departments to take legal actions against the drivers of such mobile app ride-hailing services.
On Monday 31 January 2017, a notification was sent to the mobile app ride-hailing services stating an immediate action to be taken to offer their services legally. According to the government of Punjab, some ride-hailing companies (including Careem, Uber, and A-One) haven’t registered their rides with any regulatory body.
Punjab and Sindh to Proclaim Careem, Uber as Illegal
The Careem and Uber ride-hailing services also do not have any route permit or fitness certificate. Also, such services could result in security threats to the passengers utilizing these services.
However, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Shareef offered 15 days to the ride-hailing services Careem and Uber to register their services as guided by the government to avoid further complications.
It was also clarified that these ride-hailing services would be allowed to continue their services until the deadline to registration is reached.
The transport minister informed the provincial assembly that a rent-a-car authority will be created to regulate such ride-hailing services.
However, the opposition seems to defend the ride-hailing services by Careem and Uber. PTI MNA Shehryar Afridi said, “I myself have availed this service and it should not be restricted”.
Afridi further argued that why did not the government questioned on the ride-hailing services when they started their operations. Afridi showed his concerns when he told that PTI would not rule out Careem and Uber and will support to continue their operations.
