MediaTek 5G baseband chip Hellio M70 announced for early 2019 launch

As Qualcomm announced its new 5G enabled Snapdragon 855 chip which supports 5G networks, MediaTek is all set to announce its Helio M70 5G multimode integrated baseband chip.

More recently, OnePlus has announced its new 5G enabled phone for early 2019 launch in Europe which will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC. OnePlus also said it would be the first company to launch 5G enabled smartphone in Europe.

Xiaomi has also announced a 5G version of Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 yesterday which is also expected to carry Snapdragon 855 SoC.

MediaTek is now joining the 5G field for earlier launch in order to secure the 5G position in the market. The MediaTek Helio M70 supports 5G key technologies in a single 5G baseband chip.

According to the details, the MediaTek Helio M70 will start shipments in 2019; the chip is designed with 3GPP Rel-15 5G new air interface standards which support stand-alone SA and non-independent NSA network architectures. The chip supports sub-6GHz bands, high power terminals (HPUE) and other major 5G technologies. MediaTek 5G chip will also support millimeter wave band to address the needs of various operators.

Qualcomm’s president has announced a list of smartphone manufacturers that will use Snapdragon in their devices for 5G networks, the list includes Google, Nokia, OnePlus, Samsung, Oppo, Sony, Xiaomi, Vivo, Motorola, LG, HTC, ASUS, ZTE, and Fujitsu.

MediaTek has not announced any manufacturers on their list but Meizu and Smartisan are still missing from Qualcomm’s list, how MediaTek would be able to grab vendor to use their Helio M70 is still not clear. Let’s see which manufacturer will use MediaTek Helio M70 in future.
