Windows 11: Microsoft launches emergency patch KB5121767 against crashes

The July Patch Tuesday update recently caused crashes, overheating and dead batteries on certain Dell computers. An emergency fix is now available that addresses the serious problems. If you don’t have an affected device, you don’t need the update.

Emergency Update for Dell PCs

As was the case last month, the current Patch Tuesday update KB5101650 for Windows 11, which was released in mid-July, also brought with it several bugs. Although the package contained over 570 security fixes and was intended to protect computers against increasing attacks, what was intended to be an important security update caused massive problems on some Dell systems. Affected users complained about unexpected crashes, startup problems, black screens, severe overheating of the hardware and rapidly draining batteries. In response, Microsoft has now released emergency update KB5121767 as an unscheduled bug fix for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2. It increases the operating system version number to build 26200.8894 or 26100.8894.

Like Microsoft in official support document explained, the current patch is aimed exclusively at systems affected by the problems. Users with working systems do not need the new package and can safely ignore it.

Affected systems

The error primarily occurs on computers from the manufacturer Dell. The company stopped shipping the flawed July update for affected hardware configurations. The following list includes models where the issues have been confirmed. However, other PCs could be affected:

  • Dell Pro Max 14 Premium MA14250
  • Dell Pro Max 16 Premium MA16250
  • Dell Pro Precision 7 14 PW714260
  • Dell Pro Precision 7 16 PW716260
  • Precision 5470 / 5480 / 5490 / 5770
  • XPS 17 9720 and XPS 17 9730
  • The cause of the failures lies in an incompatibility between a new USB-C interface from Windows 11 and a special driver from Intel. This so-called Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant is primarily used on newer computers. It controls thermal management and regulates the computer fans. The software also uses sensors to detect the presence of people in front of the screen in order to wake up the device when they approach. Because the previous update disrupted the interaction, the devices were no longer able to manage their energy correctly.

    Be careful with update options

Although the update is only intended for a small group of users, it can end up on uninvolved computers under certain circumstances. If the option to receive the latest updates as soon as they are available is activated in the system settings, Windows will automatically download the KB5121767 package. If you want to avoid unnecessary installations, you should deactivate the corresponding switch. However, installing the emergency update should not cause a problem. In addition to the way via Windows Update, the package can also be downloaded manually via the Microsoft Update Catalog downloaded and installed. The files are available for both x64 and ARM systems.
