Steam Machine too expensive? Valve is already naming the next problem

Buyers of the new Steam Machine will have to dig deep into their pockets, as Valve is suffering massively from the consequences of the current AI boom. Engineers are now warning of a fatal market development that could soon make living room PCs even more expensive.

Memory crisis hits Steam Machine

Valve is struggling with massive bottlenecks in the production of its new living room PC. The global shortage of memory triggered by the AI boom is driving up component costs. Buyers of the Steam Machine have to be prepared for long waiting times and permanently high prices. The company is currently only producing the quantities that the tight hardware market actually allows. The starting price for the basic model with 512 gigabytes of storage space is an impressive 1039 euros. According to those responsible, a price reduction is completely out of the question in the foreseeable future. Instead, the situation on the procurement market continues to worsen as large production capacities primarily flow to lucrative data centers. For end customers, this means that PC gaming in the living room remains a very expensive hobby.

Prices continue to rise inexorably

How Bloomberg reported, the responsible hardware engineers do not expect any improvement soon. Valve’s Yazan Aldehayyat explicitly warns that the worst is yet to come. The current retail retail prices only reflect the wholesale situation from three to six months ago. Consumers will not fully feel the true impact of the current material procurement bottlenecks until the end of the year. Accordingly, the costs of RAM and fast SSDs are likely to continue to rise in the coming months. Pierre-Loup Griffais, also an engineer at Valve, confirms the problem. He explains that the production of the Steam Machine is currently limited solely by the severely limited storage capacity on the global market. Everything that is still available is simply installed in the factories.

Success beyond sales figures

Despite the adverse circumstances and the enormous hardware costs of well over 1000 euros, Valve by no means considers the ambitious project a failure. The primary goal of the device is to establish a long-term and open platform for the living room at home. The manufacturer deliberately avoids its own exclusive titles such as Half-Life in order to instead make the entire PC ecosystem freely accessible. One of the big advantages of the open system architecture is that users can adapt the Linux-based operating system SteamOS as they wish or even replace it directly with Windows. However, the high purchase price remains a significant disadvantage. Unlike conventional consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, it is not directly subsidized by the company. Analysts do not expect the global storage market to normalize until 2028 at the earliest.
