A look at the foldable market share of different companies in China

In the past few years, the market share of South Korean conglomerate Samsung has significantly dropped in China. As of now, the company is slowly regaining its share in the country. Over the course of the previous year, the company was able to grab a 4x market share in the foldable smartphone category. The company even outperformed local companies like Vivo, Honor, and Xiaomi. Reportedly, the foldable smartphone market has incredibly grown in China over the last year.

As per the data shared by Counterpoint Research, the market share of Samsung in the foldable smartphone segment was recorded at 26% during Q1 2023. It is a six-fold increase from the share recorded for the company in the same quarter of the previous year. On the other hand, Oppo and Huawei grabbed 27% of the market share. Well, the figures are quite impressive for Samsung since the data is before the release of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. It is anticipated that the recently introduced foldable could help Samsung improve its market share in China.

In 2022, Huawei secured the top spot in the foldable smartphone market in China. It acquired 57% of the market share. But in Q1 2023, the firm’s market share nearly fell in half to 27%, irrespective of introducing the extremely thin and light Mate X3. Reportedly, the Mate X3 offers a big battery, an improved zoom camera, and fast charging as compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Furthermore, it also accompanies the two-way satellite connectivity feature for emergency communications.

On the other hand, Oppo’s market share improved from the previous 18% to 27%. Other companies, like Vivo and Honor, were also able to improve their market share in the foldable segment. However, Xiaomi’s share dropped significantly despite releasing the MIX Fold 2, the thinnest foldable smartphone. Motorola holds a small share of the foldable smartphone market in China.
