Artemis 1 lunar mission: NASA aims for launch in late August

After the successful dress rehearsal of the Artemis-1 moon rocket in late June, NASA is now confirming its planned launch dates. The flight to space must therefore take place on a date from the end of August to the beginning of September.
NASA long ago set itself an ambitious launch target for its Artemis 1 lunar mission. In May it was confirmed that it plans to take off in late summer, if all tests go well until then. The smooth tests have failed, but NASA can probably meet its old target for the SLS rocket launch. After the so-called “Wet Dress Rehearsal” dress rehearsal has been successfully completed on June 20, the journey to the moon begins “punctually”.
Start window confirmed
in an Interview with Ars Technica Jim Free, deputy administrator for the exploration systems development program said NASA is working on an Aug. 23 – Sept. 6 launch window for Artemis 1. “That’s the goal we’re aiming for,” Free said. “It would be stupid not to strive for that now. We made incredible progress last week.” According to NASA, the dates on August 30, 31, and September 1 are probably not suitable due to weather conditions, but there are 12 good candidates. Interestingly, this date selection is not the first possible departure window.
According to an older NASA publication, the time window between July 26 and August 10 was initially set as a possible date for Artemis 1. It is not known why NASA has now chosen the second time window. However, there is a suspicion that necessary repairs and the associated tests simply take too long. But that is not confirmed.
Artemis 2
Before the flight can begin, technicians must complete final preparations on the SLS rocket. This includes replacing a seal that caused a hydrogen leak during testing on June 20. NASA, therefore, returned the SLS a few days ago to the hangar of the Kennedy Space Center, where employees will work on the launch vehicle. Artemis 1 takes an unmanned Orion module on a journey around the moon. Only Artemis 2 will soon take four astronauts on board.
