Bill Gates: “Nobody thinks AI self-regulation is sufficient”

Artificial intelligence is intended to make everyday life easier – but its misuse could pose a serious danger. Bill Gates is now once again calling for tough rules for AI, while the dispute over state control continues to escalate in the USA.
Bill Gates calls for stricter rules for AI
Bill Gates has long been warning urgently about the risks of powerful AI systems. Now he is calling on the US Congress to create binding rules. According to the Microsoft co-founder, it is not enough for AI companies to largely determine their own security precautions. In conversation with NBC News Gates described the combination of malicious actors and modern AI tools as particularly dangerous. No technology has yet offered a comparable potential for damage, said Gates. This does not only mean manipulation, cyber attacks or fraud, but also possible applications in the military sector.
Security cases increase the pressure
The warning comes at the right time. Several reported incidents in which AI got out of control make control of such systems more urgent.
Dispute over state control
In Washington, opposing positions collide on the question of rules for artificial intelligence. US President Donald Trump rejects comprehensive government supervision and considers many security warnings to be excessive. His approach: Innovation should be slowed down as little as possible by regulation. Representatives of leading AI companies see it differently. Sam Altman of OpenAI and Dario Amodei of Anthropic have advocated for international security standards before the UN Security Council.
Common rules across national borders are necessary, especially for very powerful models that can plan complex tasks, write code or look for security gaps. Gates is clearly on the side of those who demand external control. Self-commitments by the industry could be a building block, but in his view they are not enough because “no one thinks self-regulation is sufficient”. It is crucial that politicians and authorities are able to understand what capabilities modern models have, how they are tested and which protective mechanisms are effective.
Law enforcement and politicians need to be involved in the discussion about what protection measures and surveillance should look like. And this must be made mandatory. Although this will mean some additional work for the industry, it will not slow down its work dramatically. Bill Gates
Not just a safety issue
It’s about controlling systems that increasingly act independently, touch digital infrastructure and can penetrate sensitive areas such as administration, health, finance or security. Gates’ warning is therefore aimed primarily at politicians: The rules should be created before serious abuse shows how late they come.
