DoorDash is trying a drone delivery service in Virginia

Recently, DoorDash and Wing of Alphabet announced the start of a drone delivery pilot program. The testing, which is restricted to “eligible items” from Wendy’s fast food chain, started in Christiansburg, Virginia, which has a population of about 22,000. It’s unclear as of yet if it includes the famous Frosty dessert/fry condiment.

Although there is just one Wendy’s location that is linked, local customers should notice a “deliver by drone” choice on the DoorDash checkout page. According to the corporation, orders should arrive in 30 minutes or less. This means that drones in the air will arrive about as quickly as a typical 1980s pizza delivery.

Additionally, DoorDash notes that Wendy’s is merely the first restaurant partner, implying that more will follow. Drones, according to the firm, will provide a more “efficient, sustainable, and convenient delivery option for consumers. In order to achieve this, the online meal delivery service intends to expand the initiative to additional US cities all year round.

You are not delusional if any of this sounds uncannily familiar. Pilot initiatives of this kind have been appearing everywhere. Even so, this is not DoorDash’s and Wing’s first collaboration. In 2022, the businesses collaborated to carry out a comparable project in Australia. The initiative was so successful that it eventually grew to include 60 restaurants across Queensland.

In this domain, Wing is unquestionably the best. The startup just started delivering drones from Walmart to customers in Dallas. Wing launched a new delivery drone earlier this year that can carry a maximum payload of five pounds and achieve speeds of 65 miles per hour.
