Former Qualcomm semiconductor expert sought by Samsung

The South Korean tech giant is on its way to hiring another expert from an opponent semiconductor firm. Reports suggest that Samsung is in talks with  Zhao Guo. Zhao Guo is the co-founder of Biren Technology (a Chinese semiconductor company). Previously the company has hired experts from TSMC and Qualcomm.

Guo is well-known for his experience in the GPU area at Qualcomm. He worked on the development of the company’s Adreno GPU architecture for five generations. Recently, in 2019, Guo and some other like-minded people build Biren Technology. Biren Technology specializes in GPU. similar to many other Chinese companies, Biren Tech was affected by the US sanctions. The company had to redesign its strategy in order to stay in the business with some of its partners, like the manufacturer SMC.

When it comes to Samsung, the company has not been successful with the non-memory business in contrast to some other areas in which it is quite successful. It even tried out its own SoC i.e., Exynos. However, they were not successful. For this reason, the company opted for the Qualcomm Snapdragon processors for its devices. The chip fabrication process of Samsung is inferior to TSMC’s.

In addition to this, Samsung also tried to develop its own custom Mongoose PCU core. The plan didn’t work. While still utilizing the default ARM CPU cores, it has partnered with AMD to deliver Radeon visuals to mobile devices.

The only Samsung processor to date with AMD graphics is the Exynos 2200 from last year. (Xclipse 920 GPU). The two businesses are just getting started, though, as their collaboration was just recently expanded. The Korean company is currently strengthening its talent pool for semiconductors through the selective employment of industry leaders.
