Google might prevent the development of Google Camera Ports

The initial release of the Android 15 includes some interesting new features. In related news, the new Android version won’t be available on the Pixel 5 series rather the official software support for Pixel 5 has ended. With this, the smartphones are no longer eligible for porting the GCam app on non-Pixel Android devices. Besides this, the new Android 15 update is available on the Pixel 6 series that are powered by the Tensor chipset, Google’s custom chipset.

In 2020, the company announced the Pixel 5 series. It is now 2024 which marks the end of software support for these smartphones. Pixel 5 is powered by a Snapdragon chipset. However, the company gained full control of the processes with the introduction of its processors. Some of the processor features are limited to Pixel devices. In this way, these features are unavailable on non-Pixel devices.

Furthermore, Google Camera may stop supporting Qualcomm DSP, which is required to process photos on Qualcomm chipsets. This implies that the image processing time may rise dramatically, rendering the GCam ports useless even if the GCam app is ported to other devices. There is no official word on whether this will happen or not. However, we can expect it given the fact that Google no longer supports Snapdragon devices. Besides this, there is an even bigger issue with the low performance of the Tensor chipsets.

Since 2021, Google has debuted its own custom chipsets. Despite this, the Tensor chipsets feature low power and efficiency. The most recent Tensor chipsets offer performance similar to Qualcomm’s flagships which debuted three years ago. With the long battery life and powerful processing of modern devices, Google should either go back to using Snapdragon chipsets or make significant progress with Tensor.
