Google plans to integrate Health Connect into Android 14

Google unveiled its Health Connect system at the Google I/O 2022. This Health Connect system is developed in partnership with Samsung. The system is an Android API. It is capable of collecting health and fitness data from apps and devices. Followed by the collection of data, which is securely stored. Even the data could be shared with other devices or apps. Presently, Health Connect is presented as an app on Android smartphones as well as on Wear OS smartwatches. However, we can expect the Health Connect system to become an integral part of Android 14.

Not long ago, Google introduced Android 13 QPR2 Beta 1 for Pixel smartphones. One thing to notice here is that the beta firmware is pre-loaded with the Health Connect app. However, the Health Connect app might not be restricted to only Pixel devices in the near future. Mishaal Rahman, the Senior Technical Editor at Esper, mentioned that the code changes submitted before the AOSP Gerrit indicate that Health Connect will likely become an Android 14 system service. In other words, we can say that Health Connect will be the default app on Android 14.

Now the question arises that how this integration will help the users. Well, if we go by these suggestions then in the future more developers will be required to integrate the service into their apps. The high the number of apps having integration with Health Connect, the simpler it would be for users to communicate their health and fitness data across apps. Furthermore, it indicates that users could easily swap between the smartwatches of distinct brands. Since their data will be securely stored.

As of now, more than ten apps have integration with the Health Connect app. These apps include Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, Lifesum, Outdooractive, Oura, Flo, HealthilyMe, Samsung Health, Google Fit, and Prooy. If you are utilizing any of these above-mentioned apps, then you can securely share your health data across these apps by using Health Connect. In the future, when Google integrates Health Connect with Android 14, other smartphone brands like Realme and Xiaomi could also support Health Connect in their fitness apps.
