The iPhone 13 expected by the end of the year will “probably” be equipped, in addition to the classic Face ID, also with a scanner for fingerprint recognition integrated under the display with which to carry out biometric authentication.
After the first rumours of recent months, a new note from the international bank Barclays also arrives today in which this hypothesis is reported in addition to the presence of a small notch. The LiDAR scanner, on the other hand, will continue to be limited to Pro versions only. Barclays said this information is based at least in part on “extensive industry conversations” with suppliers over the past few weeks.
The smaller notch, we read in the note, would be made possible by the adoption of a “better-integrated version of the current lighting system” used for the Face ID. A “more important change”, on the other hand, should arrive in 2022 thanks to a ToF system that will have an “even smaller footprint”. All of these rumours are in line with TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction that at least some 2022 iPhones may have a display with a small hole.

The return of Touch ID has already been speculated several times in the past. As early as August 2019, Kuo said Apple had plans to launch an iPhone with both Face ID and an under-display fingerprint scanner in 2021. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern also have reported in recent months rumours to this effect.
Barclays analysts were the first to say that Apple was planning to remove the charger from the stock of the new iPhones. In the past, they have also accurately revealed the arrival of True Tone on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, the removal of the headphone jack adapter with the iPhone XS and iPhone XR models, and the removal of the 3D Touch on all iPhone 11 models.
