iPhone 15 Pro To Receive Spatial Video Later This Year

Apple says the iPhone 15 Pro’s cameras will add another feature later this year that can capture spatial video for Apple Vision Pro. The most recent Apple event still left many questions unanswered.

Great News With Little Information

“The boundaries of what you can record with a smartphone are pushed by the iPhone 15 Pro,” Apple said at the iPhone event. This is an announcement that has made many interested parties sit up and take notice.

However, Apple hasn’t said anything more than these few words in support of hospital video, except that users will be able to record “spatial videos” later this year.

Spatial Video is Apple’s name for what is essentially 3D videography. The iPhone 15 Pro is capable of recording spatial videos natively by combining the videos captured by the main and ultra-wide camera sensors, resulting in a type of stereoscopic video.

Corresponding video cameras for the 3D effect have been on the market for a long time, so it will be exciting to see how well Apple can implement this in a smartphone. Apple hasn’t commented specifically, but it is expected that the iPhone 15 Pro will also be able to take spatial photos.

Spatial computing headset

These 3D videos can then be played back using Apple’s Vision Pro “spatial computing” headset when it launches in the US early next year.

Many other questions remain unanswered. For example, it is not clear what type of file format these spatial videos will use. There are already fears that Apple is using a proprietary format.

Apple also hasn’t mentioned how large the files will be. Presumably, iPhone 15 Pro users will have to select a special new mode in the camera app to record spatial videos and will then only be able to record a limited length. How these videos are saved in the Photos app and whether they can be played on the iPhone is also unknown.

Launch of the headset and new iPhone features

Apple will no doubt announce the answers to these questions soon. For users in Europe, there is basically no rush to answer – Apple’s new headset will not be launched outside the USA anytime soon.
