Microsoft Confirms Issues With Windows 10 and 11 While Copying And Saving Files

Microsoft has confirmed a new issue that may affect both Windows 10 and Windows 11 users. As a result, saving or copying files may fail under certain circumstances. The Windows team is currently investigating the cause.

This emerges from a new entry in the Windows Release Health Dashboard. We will now examine problems that can occur when saving, copying, or appending files in 32-bit applications. We have translated the entry for you and added it to the end of this post.

Interestingly, the bug has not yet been linked to a specific update. The current client versions of Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 as well as Windows 11 21H2 and 22H2 are affected – but according to the first findings probably only managed commercial devices.

In addition, according to Microsoft, the problem can currently be quickly identified and corrected by the user – after a failed attempt, you should simply try again: “Since the problem only occurs sporadically, it is likely that another attempt will be successful”, writes the group.

The solution comes via an update

Nonetheless, it’s an annoying mistake. The Windows team, therefore, promises to provide an update. A date for availability was not given. However, one can currently assume that it should already be ready for patch day on June 13th. This new error joins a series of problems that are currently known for Windows 10 and Windows 11. For example, Windows 11 users complain about slow VPN connections and a strange SATA bug. Windows 10 may experience sudden crashes due to bootcat file errors.

Saving or copying files may occasionally fail

Occasional problems can occur when saving, copying, or appending files with 32-bit applications that are aware of large addresses and use the CopyFile API. Windows devices are more likely to be affected by this issue when using commercial/enterprise security software that uses extended file attributes. We are not receiving reports that copying files using File Explorer is affected, but the CopyFile API used in applications may be affected.

Microsoft Office applications such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel are only affected if you are using 32-bit versions and you may receive a “Document not saved” error message. Consumers using Windows devices at home or on unmanaged commercial devices are unlikely to experience this issue. Note: Applications are not affected by this issue if they are 64-bit or 32-bit and do NOT have large addresses.

Workaround: To mitigate the issue, you can try saving or copying again. Since the issue is intermittent, it’s likely that trying again will succeed.
