Microsoft has surprisingly changed plans for the end of support for the Edge web browser for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2. The Edge team has now announced that it will continue to provide security updates until October 2023.
While the bottom line is that support for various platforms will end after Edge version 109, this does not mean that vulnerabilities will not be closed for Windows Server.
Microsoft has now clarified this in the Windows Blog. With the start of the new year, the group stopped supporting Windows 7 and 8.1 and was reminded of the imminent end of Windows Server 2012. At the same time, support for Edge on older platforms was discontinued. Therefore, the decision to extend the security updates for Windows Server 2012 also comes as a surprise.
Now there are the slightly revised plans. Those using Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 will continue to receive Edge browser updates, but not version updates. As a result, there will no longer be any new functions.
However, Microsoft will ensure that all known vulnerabilities are eliminated. Edge 110 will not be released for Windows Server 2012 at the beginning of February, users will receive a pure security update. After October 10, 2023, the security updates will finally come to an end. This is also the end date for extended support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. Putting both support ends on one day is a very sensible decision.
Microsoft has therefore now added the following to the old announcement and published a statement on the new end of support:
“Microsoft Edge version 109 will be the last supported version on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 (version 110 and later versions will no longer be made available). Version 109 will provide critical security fixes and fixes for known exploits until October 10, 2023 Bugs are received. WebView2 Runtime in version 109 will be supported in the same way. Furthermore, Internet Explorer 11 will receive patches on these operating systems for as long as they are supported.”
