Microsoft fixes Windows 11 bootloop bug with emergency rollback

After a fatal error in the optional update for Windows 11, Microsoft reacted quickly. A so-called KIR update is now intended to fix an annoying bootloop bug and solve problems with USB and Bluetooth devices. Affected users can breathe a sigh of relief.

Windows 11 troubleshooting

Microsoft has provided a fix for serious issues caused by the recently released optional update KB5043145 for Windows 11. This update resulted in constant reboots for some users. The error in the update was so serious that affected systems ended up in an endless loop.

They either launched Windows’ automatic repair tool or ended up in BitLocker Recovery. In addition, USB and Bluetooth devices such as keyboards, printers and wireless mice no longer worked for some users.

Known Issue Rollback (KIR) as a solution

As Microsoft reports, the The company has now initiated a so-called Known Issue Rollback (KIR).. This measure is intended to resolve the issues without users having to intervene manually. KIR is a proven technique used by Microsoft to roll back incorrect non-security updates when serious bugs occur.

Automatic fix

For private users, the solution should take effect automatically within 24 hours. Restarting the computer can speed up the process. Corporate IT administrators, on the other hand, must take action and install and configure a special group policy to resolve the issue on managed devices.

Microsoft withdraws incorrect update

Microsoft has now withdrawn the faulty update KB5043145 for private users. This underlines how seriously the group takes the problems that have arisen. At the same time, the company is working on integrating the fix into a future Windows update.

Review of similar incidents

The incident is part of a series of similar problems:

  • August: Microsoft had to fix a bug that caused boot problems on Windows Server 2019 systems.
  • July: There were issues with security updates that forced some Windows devices into BitLocker recovery.
