Microsoft Has Initiated Testing NotePad Tabs In Windows 11

Microsoft has released a new pre-release version of Notepad for Windows 11 that allows using multiple tabs in the app. The new feature will be rolled out with the new Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25281 in the Dev Channel.

At the end of December, the new Notepad app with its tabs was accidentally leaked, and now Microsoft is starting to test the change. After File Explorer, Notepad is the next application that also supports tabs in Windows 11.

“With this update, we’re introducing multi-tab support – one of the most requested features by the community – which allows you to create, manage and organize multiple files in a single Notepad window,” explained Microsoft executive Dave Grochocki in a Windows blog on the release.

Tabs are practical for managing several tasks at the same time and have proven themselves because they can be used more clearly than several app windows. The feature allows users to open multiple folders and directories in one window, just like a web browser can open multiple web pages in one window.

“You can still work with files in multiple windows by dragging a tab into its own window, and a new app preference lets you choose whether files open in new tabs or in a new window by default.” on the Windows blog. There’s also support for keyboard shortcuts to manage Notepad tabs and some improvements in unsaved file management. Microsoft is already aware of the issues associated with this new feature and has warned users that using keyboard shortcuts could cause problems.

If you encounter problems while testing the new tab support, you can submit a report via the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Notepad.
